HAMILTON, Ill. – Larry Ray Sewell, 76, of Hamilton, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 8, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois, surrounded by his family.

Larry was born May 15, 1947, in rural St. James, Missouri, to Clarence Raymond Sewell and Eva Copeland Sewell.

He attended Louisa-Muscatine High School and graduated with the class of 1966.

Larry enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1967 and proudly served his country as an aircraft mechanic during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1974.

On Oct. 15, 1977, he was united in marriage with Susan Diane Reneau at her parents’ home in rural Hamilton. She preceded him in death on April 15, 2021.

Larry was employed by Roquette America for over 30 years and was a member of New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk. He was a member of the Hancock County Vietnam Veterans and was so proud to take the Honor Flight with his cousins, Jim and Don Sewell. Larry was always the calm voice of reason and the solid rock of the family. He will be forever remembered for his unwavering love.

Larry will be greatly missed by his children: Justin (Andrea) Sewell and Tara (Sewell) Baker of Hamilton, and William Sewell and Julie Camp of Louisiana; son-in-law Sam Darnell of Quincy; grandchildren: Morgan Lewis and Ryan Darnell of Quincy, Brenden and Walker Sewell of Hamilton, Brenna and Logan Baker of Hamilton, and Abbygail and Joshua Normand of Louisiana; his first great-grandchild due in late June; siblings: Dorothy (Don) Orr of Columbus Junction, Iowa, Linda Greenhill of Bettendorf, Ron Sewell of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Gary (Linda) Sewell of Dubuque, Janice Sewell of Cedar Rapids, and Mark (Elisa) Sewell of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; as well as countless brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, aunts, cousins and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife Susan of 43 years; daughter Shay Sewell Darnell; parents Ray and Eva Sewell; father-in-law and mother-in-law Robert and Glenda Reneau; brother-in-law Bob Greenhill; and sister-in-law Barbara Reneau.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, March 15 at Printy Funeral Home in Hamilton. A private graveside service will be held after at Riverside Cemetery in rural Hamilton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hancock County Vietnam Veterans or the Great River Honor Flight.
